Lylat
A handful of worlds, one elite squad, and every threat the galaxy can throw at them.
The Lylat system is the small, multi-planet star system at the heart of the Star Fox saga. Governed by the Lylat Council, it is home to several distinct worlds—most notably the verdant, forested planet of Corneria, the volcanic expanse of Norfair, the dark industrial hellscape of Venom, and the vast ocean world of Macinau. It is here that the elite fighter squad Star Fox, led by the fox pilot Fox McCloud, defends its people against a rotating cast of existential threats, from the insectoid Andonuts to rogue AI and political conspiracies.
As a setting, the Lylat system functions as both a cozy, lived-in neighborhood and a flashpoint for galactic-scale conflict. Its planets are close enough to each other that a single Arwing sortie can hop from one world to the next within a single mission, giving the system a tight, interconnected feel that makes it feel like a single, breathing stage for the team's adventures.

Lore & Background
The Lylat system is a relatively compact stellar neighborhood, its planets close enough that inter-system travel is routine for the Council's military and the Star Fox team. Corneria, with its rolling green highlands, dense forests, and a single major city, serves as the political and military heart of the system. The Lylat Council, a governing assembly of the system's species, coordinates defense and diplomacy from there, and it is the Council that formally requests Star Fox's intervention whenever a crisis erupts on one of the outer worlds.
The system's history is a patchwork of invasions and near-catastrophes. In the events of Star Fox 64, the Andonuts—a hive-minded, insectoid alien species—overrun several Lylat planets in rapid succession, forcing Star Fox to fight a multi-world campaign to liberate each one and ultimately destroy the Andonuts' flagship. Later conflicts, as depicted in Star Fox Assault and Star Fox Command, introduce new enemies and political machinations, but the pattern remains: the Lylat Council calls, Star Fox answers, and the team's Arwings, Landmaster, and raw nerve hold the line.
What makes the Lylat system feel lived-in, rather than merely a backdrop, is the way its planets are treated as characters in their own right. Norfair's scorching lava fields and crumbling industrial ruins, Venom's perpetual storm and skeletal architecture, Macinau's endless swells and coral canyons—each world has a distinct temperature, palette, and rhythm that the player's craft responds to. The system is small enough to feel like home, yet large enough that no two missions repeat the same sky.
In Their Own Story
The Arwing's engines hummed a low, bone-dead note as Fox banked hard over Norfair's ridge, the heat shimmering off the basalt in long amber waves. Slippy's voice crackled in his ear, half-laughing, half-panicked, calling out a bearing on the Andonut drop-ship that had just torn a gash in the clouds. Below, the lava rivers pulsed like slow veins, and the whole sky was the color of a bruise. Fox lined up the shot, felt the familiar weight of the trigger, and thought, not for the first time, that the Lylat system was the only address he'd ever needed. One small cluster of worlds, one small team, and the whole galaxy trying to walk over them. He fired. The ship bloomed into a quiet orange star against the dark, and the engines roared back to full as he rolled into the next canyon.
Reader's Guide
You arrive at the Lylat system the way you'd arrive at a small, well-kept town: a handful of distinct districts, each with its own weather, its own trouble, and its own way of trying to kill you. Corneria greets you first—rolling green plateaus, a wide river cutting through the forest, and the low, welcoming hum of the Star Fox base nestled in a clearing. The opening mission here is a tight, close-range dogfight through the tree canopy, the kind of run-and-gun corridor that sets the tone for everything that follows.
Norfair hits you with heat. The terrain is all cracked basalt, sulfurous vents, and rivers of molten rock that you thread between at speed. The Arwing missions here are long, winding canyon runs where the lava glows beneath you and the sky is a permanent sunset. The Landmaster sections add a grounded, rumbling counterpoint, the vehicle's treads crunching over black glass while you blast through industrial outposts half-swallowed by the earth.
Venom is the system's dark heart. The sky is a bruised purple-grey, the architecture is skeletal and angular, and the air itself seems to resist your engines. The final confrontation takes place here, a multi-phase battle that escalates from a dogfight into a full-scale assault on the enemy flagship, the kind of set-piece that still gives players chills decades later.
Macinau, the ocean world, trades terrain for water. The Landmaster becomes a hovercraft skimming across endless swells, and the Arwing carves through low cloud banks above a sea that stretches to every horizon. It's the system's breather—a quieter, more open stage before the next storm rolls in.
Did You Know?
- The Lylat system is the consistent setting across the entire Star Fox game series, from the 1993 Super Nintendo original through Star Fox Zero and beyond, giving it one of the most stable 'home bases' in gaming.
- The Lylat Council, the system's governing body, is the entity that formally commissions Star Fox for each major crisis, making the team effectively the system's rapid-response military.
- Each Lylat planet is designed with a distinct visual and mechanical identity—Norfair's volcanic canyons, Venom's industrial gloom, Macinau's open ocean—so that no two missions feel like the same stage.
- The Andonuts, the primary antagonists of Star Fox 64, are an insectoid, hive-minded species whose invasion of multiple Lylat planets in rapid succession is the inciting event of that game's campaign.
