Saru
Thread the vines, dodge the monkeys, and punch through the green wall before the Armada slips away.
Saru is the sixth main-campaign mission in Star Fox 64, a fast-paced jungle canyon run that sends the Star Fox team deep into a dense, overgrown forest to intercept an Armada supply convoy. The name is drawn from the Japanese word for "monkey," a nod to the swarming primate-like enemies that hurl projectiles and latch onto the player's starfighter as you thread through narrow, vine-choked passages.
As a level, Saru sits between the icy waterways of Katina and the final push into Venom, serving as a tonal breather that trades open space for claustrophobic, ground-level flight. Its lush green palette and organic obstacles contrast sharply with the metallic corridors of earlier stages, making it one of the most visually distinct missions in the 64 campaign.

Lore & Background
In the Star Fox universe, the planet that hosts the Saru region is one of the many worlds Andonovich's Armada has been siphoning resources from. The jungle itself is ancient and thick, its canopy so dense that starfighters must fly at treetop level, skimming over moss-covered boulders and ducking under arching branches. The local fauna—large, aggressive primates—have been agitated by the Armada's presence, either through sonic disruption or simple territorial irritation, and they attack anything that breaks through the canopy.
The Star Fox team's orders are straightforward: punch a corridor through the jungle, neutralize the enemy gun emplacements the Armada has set up among the trees, and destroy the convoy transport hiding at the canyon's far end. The mission is less about raw firepower than about spatial awareness; the canyon narrows, widens, and twists, and a single misjudged bank can send a starfighter careening into a wall of rock.
For fans, Saru has a particular charm. It's the one stage where the soundtrack shifts to a lighter, more percussive rhythm, the color palette explodes into greens and golds, and the enemy AI feels almost playful—monkeys leaping across your cockpit, vines whipping across your screen. It's a reminder that even in a war against a galactic warlord, the galaxy still has wild, untamed corners.
In Their Own Story
The Arwing's engines hummed low as Falco banked hard left, his nose almost kissing a curtain of hanging moss. Ahead, the canyon walls pressed in like the jaws of a green mouth, and somewhere in the canopy above, something heavy shifted its weight. A monkey the size of a small car swung down on a vine, baring teeth the color of old bone, and hurled a boulder that whistled past his starboard wing.
"Easy, kid," Slippy's voice crackled over the comms, tinny and far away. "You're in the monkey's backyard now. Don't scratch the furniture."
Falco grinned, rolled the Arwing into a lazy barrel, and let the boulder tumble past. The canyon opened. A transport ship, fat and ugly, sat parked in a clearing choked with ferns. He lined up his cannon, felt the familiar tick in his index finger, and thought: one more ugly thing to make pretty. The monkeys shrieked overhead. He fired.
Reader's Guide
OBJECTIVE: Fly the length of the jungle canyon, destroy enemy gun turrets and primate attackers, and destroy the Armada transport at the canyon's terminus.
KEY SET-PIECES: The opening stretch is a wide, sun-dappled corridor—use it to build speed and clear the first wave of monkeys. The middle section narrows dramatically; vines and boulders force tight, precise banking. Watch for monkeys that lunge from above and attach to your fighter; a quick shot or a hard roll dislodges them. The final stretch opens into a clearing where the convoy transport sits among the trees.
BOSS ENCOUNTER: The transport is a large, slow target with multiple weak points. Stay mobile—its return fire is tracking and punishing at close range. Focus fire on the glowing nodes until the hull breaks apart.
NARRATIVE STAKES: This convoy is resupplying the Armada's forward positions ahead of the final push into Venom. Losing it weakens the enemy's last defensive layer.
CROSS-GAME NOTES: Saru is a Star Fox 64 main-campaign mission. Its design philosophy—tight, organic canyon flight with swarming light enemies—echoes in later titles' jungle-themed stages, but the specific Saru layout and its monkey cast are unique to the 64 experience. In Star Fox 64's Arcade mode, the same canyon appears with tighter time limits and more aggressive enemy density.
Did You Know?
- The name "Saru" is the Japanese word for monkey, a direct reference to the primate-like enemies that populate the level.
- Saru is one of only a few Star Fox 64 stages set entirely at or below the treetop level, requiring the player to fly close to organic terrain rather than open space.
- The level's color palette—rich greens, golds, and browns—stands out against the predominantly blue, grey, and red tones of the other six main stages.
- In Star Fox 64, the Saru stage's background music shifts to a lighter, percussion-driven rhythm, a deliberate tonal contrast to the heavier industrial tracks of Norfair and Macinau.
