Norfair
Fly the fire. Break the beast. Leave Norfair in smoke.
Norfair is a volcanic, industrial world that serves as one of the core campaign missions in the Star Fox franchise. It first appears in the original 1993 Super Famicom title and returns in Star Fox 64 and Star Fox 64 DS. The planet is defined by its jagged canyon terrain, rivers of molten rock, and the heavy Androssian military installations that the Star Fox team must punch through to reach the level's final target.
As a mission, Norfair occupies a mid-campaign slot in the standard Star Fox sequence, sitting between the open-water Fichina stage and the dense jungle of Zoness. It is the level where the Arwing crew transitions from relatively open combat into a tighter, more claustrophobic gauntlet of turrets, obstacles, and a large mechanical foe guarding the planet's core installation.

Lore & Background
Norfair is a world of basalt and magma, its surface scarred by centuries of tectonic upheaval. The planet's canyons run deep and narrow, with rivers of molten rock threading between towering rock spires. Andross's forces recognized the strategic value of these natural chokepoints and seeded the canyon walls with automated turret batteries, missile batteries, and heavy armor plating, turning the geological features into a kill-zone for any craft that dares enter.
The Star Fox team's intelligence reports describe Norfair as a staging ground for Andross's deeper operations. The large mechanical guardian at the canyon's terminus is not merely a sentinel; it is a power node that feeds energy to the broader Androssian network. Destroying it is essential to cutting the enemy's supply chain before the final push into Venom. Fox and his wingmates have noted that the heat and turbulence inside the canyon make formation flying far more punishing than over open water or sky.
Fans often cite Norfair as the level where the Star Fox missions shift in tone. The earlier stages—Corneria's bright skies, Macinau's open plains, Fichina's ocean spray—feel almost exploratory. Norfair is where the campaign turns hot, loud, and desperate. The lava below, the turrets snapping from every ridge, the sense that the canyon itself is trying to crush you: it is the franchise's signature "pressure cooker" stage.
In Their Own Story
The Arwing's starboard engine coughed as Fox banked hard left, shaving the tip of a basalt spire. Behind him, Slippy's Arwing kicked up a spray of molten slag, and the cockpit temperature gauge climbed past the red line.
"I can't— I can't see the next turret!" Slippy's voice cracked over comms.
"You'll see it when you don't want to," Fox muttered, threading the gap between two canyon walls that were closing like a jaw. Lava roared three hundred meters below, painting the rock in arterial orange. A turret swiveled into view, its barrel already glowing.
Fox fired. The turret exploded in a shower of sparks and black smoke. Ahead, the canyon opened into a vast industrial basin, and there it was—the guardian. A mountain of segmented armor and rotating weapon pods, its central core pulsing like a diseased heart.
"All wings, converge," Fox said, and the four Arwings fanned out, engines screaming, into the fire.
Reader's Guide
OBJECTIVE: Fly the Arwing through Norfair's volcanic canyon, destroy enemy turrets and craft, and defeat the large mechanical guardian guarding the planet's power installation.
KEY SET-PIECES: The mission opens over open volcanic terrain before the canyon narrows. You'll navigate a series of tight S-curves where lava rivers run along the canyon floor and turret batteries pop up from the ridgelines. Mid-mission, the corridor tightens further—expect low-clearance gaps, rotating obstacles, and clusters of missile-firing drones. The final stretch opens into a wide industrial basin where the boss is stationed. Formation flying with Peppy, Slippy, and Falco (or your chosen wingmates) matters here: the canyon is too narrow for loose formations, and a stray missile from a wingmate can clip a wall.
BOSS ENCOUNTER: The guardian is a large, multi-segmented mechanical beast. It attacks with sweeping beam sweeps, projectile volleys, and a charge that sends it lunging down the canyon. You must dodge its attacks while targeting exposed weak points—typically the core or the weapon pods—across several phases. In Star Fox 64, the fight takes place in the open basin; in Star Fox 64 DS, the encounter is restructured with different attack patterns and the DS-specific control scheme.
NARRATIVE STAKES: Norfair is the campaign's midpoint pressure test. Fail here and the Androssian supply chain stays intact, making the later Zoness and Venom missions significantly harder. The level is designed to test your canyon-flying reflexes and formation discipline before the endgame.
DIFFERENCES ACROSS GAMES: In the 1993 SNES original, Norfair is a side-scrolling pseudo-3D gauntlet. In Star Fox 64, it becomes a full 3D free-flight canyon run. In Star Fox 64 DS, the mission is reworked with different enemy placements, a revised boss pattern set, and the dual-screen interface altering how you manage your radar and targeting.
Did You Know?
- Norfair's volcanic canyon design makes it one of the most visually distinct levels in the series, standing out sharply against the blue skies of Corneria and the green density of Zoness.
- In Star Fox 64, the canyon's narrow geometry means that even a small miscalculation in a bank can send the Arwing clipping rock walls, making it a favorite level for players testing their reflexes.
- The level's position as the fourth of six main missions in Star Fox 64 places it right at the campaign's midpoint, where the enemy introduces its heaviest turret and drone loadouts before the Venom finale.
- Star Fox 64 DS reworked Norfair's enemy placements and boss attack patterns, so a player who memorized the 64 version will find the DS version's timing and spacing noticeably different.
